England Top Scorers: The All-Time Men's Goalscoring List

22 October 2026, 6 minute read

England's all-time top scorer is Harry Kane, with 91 goals in 125 caps. Wayne Rooney is second on 53 and Bobby Charlton third on 49, and the full top 15 is below with caps and years for every player.

All figures are correct as of 22 October 2026. England's most recent match was the 3-0 Nations League win over Czechia on 6 October 2026, when Kane scored twice and drew level with Peter Shilton's men's record of 125 caps. Kane's numbers will be out of date by the next international break, so check the date if you're settling an argument.

3 Bobby Charlton 49 106 1958 to 1970
4 Gary Lineker 48 80 1984 to 1992
5 Jimmy Greaves 44 57 1959 to 1967
6 Michael Owen 40 89 1998 to 2008
=7 Tom Finney 30 76 1946 to 1958
=7 Nat Lofthouse 30 33 1950 to 1958
=7 Alan Shearer 30 63 1992 to 2000
=10 Vivian Woodward 29 23 1903 to 1911
=10 Frank Lampard 29 106 1999 to 2014
12 Steve Bloomer 28 23 1895 to 1907

14 Bryan Robson 26 90 1980 to 1991
15 Geoff Hurst 24 49 1966 to 1972

Just outside: Stan Mortensen (23 goals in 25 caps), Tommy Lawton (22 in 23) and Raheem Sterling (20 in 82).

A few things jump out. Woodward and Bloomer managed nearly a goal and a quarter per game, in an era of very few internationals a year. Lofthouse got his 30 in 33 games. Greaves scored 44 in 57 and still finished fifth. At the other end, Frank Lampard's 29 from midfield took 106 caps, and Bryan Robson's 26 came from a man who spent most of his career as a box-to-box captain rather than a striker.

The Ball Boffin version

Ball Boffin's daily quiz has a prompt that asks you to name one of England's top 15 men's goalscorers. Its list runs to the end of June 2025, and the 15 names are exactly the ones above: Kane has added a pile of goals since then, but nobody has entered or left the top 15. Kane, Rooney and Charlton will barely trouble the scorers. Bloomer, Woodward and Robson are where the points are.

How the record passed from Bloomer to Kane

Steve Bloomer and Vivian Woodward. Bloomer scored 28 goals between 1895 and 1907. Woodward went one better, finishing on 29 when his England career ended in 1911, and that number stood for decades.

Nat Lofthouse and Tom Finney. Lofthouse drew level on 29 with two goals against Finland in Helsinki on 20 May 1956. Finney joined them on 29 against the Soviet Union on 8 June 1958, then took the record alone with his 30th against Northern Ireland in Belfast on 4 October 1958. It lasted 18 days. Lofthouse scored his 30th against the Soviet Union in London on 22 October 1958. Both finished on 30.

Bobby Charlton and Jimmy Greaves. Charlton equalled the 30 in June 1963 and took the record alone with his 31st, against Wales, that October. Greaves then went past him with a hat-trick against Northern Ireland on 3 October 1964, which took him to 35, and ended his England career on 44 in 1967. Charlton overtook him in 1968, in a friendly against Sweden, and finished on 49. Lineker got to 48 and ran out of games.

Wayne Rooney. Rooney's 50th goal, a penalty in a 2-0 Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland on 8 September 2015, finally took Charlton's record. He retired from England on 53.

Harry Kane. Kane equalled Rooney with a penalty in the 2022 World Cup quarter-final against France (and missed a second one later in the same game). His 54th, another penalty, came against Italy in Naples on 23 March 2023. He has gone on to 91, and on current form the next record holder may not have been born yet.

England's top scorers at World Cups

These are goals at World Cup finals tournaments only, up to and including the 2026 World Cup, where England finished third.

Player World Cup goals Tournaments

The single-tournament record belonged to Lineker, whose six goals won the Golden Boot at Mexico 1986. Kane matched it with six in 2018, also winning the Golden Boot, and got six again in 2026. Then Jude Bellingham scored seven at the 2026 World Cup, the last of them in the third-place play-off against France, and the record is his.

England's top scorers at the Euros

Goals at European Championship finals tournaments, up to and including Euro 2024.

Player Euros goals Tournaments

Shearer's five at Euro 96 is still the most by an England player at a single Euros, and it won him the Golden Boot on home soil. Kane caught his overall total of seven at Euro 2024 but, as things stand, has not passed it.
